Wolf and Distant Past (狼と遠い過去, Ōkami to Tōi Kako) is the second episode of the first season of the Spice and Wolf anime.
Official Synopsis[]
Lawrence and Holo meet a young merchant who shares a scheme he hopes will bring profit. Holo teaches Lawrence how to relate to folks who may wish to deceive.
Plot[]
Rain arrives, so Lawrence and Holo take refuge inside a nearby church. Lawrence learns more about Holo's connection to wheat as they wring water from their clothes. Drying off in the great hall, they meet a nobleman, with whom Lawrence leaves a good impression with his conversational skills. Afterwards, a junior traveling merchant named Zheren approaches Lawrence and tells him of a plan to trade old silver coins for new ones to make a profit.
Back in their room, Lawrence gives Holo a leather pouch with some of her wheat. Over dinner, Holo tells Lawrence that she sensed Zheren lying, though neither she nor Lawrence know why he lied. Lawrence decides to go along with Zheren's offer in hopes of profiting from it either as advertised or by discovering the underlying scheme.
The next day, Lawrence agrees to meet with Zheren in the port city of Pazzio to discuss further plans. Zheren leaves first on foot. After departing with Holo, Lawrence recounts how he was attacked by wolves about eight times while traveling in the wilderness. Holo defends the wolves’ actions, and Lawrence flares up in anger. After a lull in the conversation, Lawrence asks Holo if she has ever eaten a human, but she refuses to answer.
